CAMP Asia on WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

Smoking is the number one cause of different non-communicable disease.

There are a lot of national government, international/local NGOs efforts and many others are working on these.

Here are the fact sheets in the Philippines regarding on Cigarette Smoking:

The Center for Asian Mission for the Poor (CAMP)- Asia, Inc. (www.icamp.asia) is a non-stock, and non-government organization duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (Reg No. CN201000829), implementing projects in livelihood, education, and public health, with funding support from Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), World Together Foundation, Hanshin University, Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation, Hyubsung Lohas, and Community Chest of Korea

CAMP Asia is working on Towerville Phase 6 which serves as a relocation site of Metropolitan areas since 2011. Around 7,000 families, displaced from different parts of metropolis like Quezon City, Navotas, Caloocan, Tondo, Malabon, Pandacan, and San Juan, have formally settled in the area. But as population grows, the need to improve the provision of basic necessities like healthcare services also becomes crucial.  The case of Towerville Phase 6 as a relocation site poses a challenging role for the local government, specifically the barangay unit to respond quickly in addressing immediate needs of their growing populace, hence, the intervention of NGOs is with no doubt relevant. In fact, according to the recent survey conducted by CAMP Asia, Inc. in July 2013, health was identified as one of the major concerns of community members in Barangay Gaya-Gaya, along with livelihood and education.

CAMP Asia, through the funding support of the Community Chest of Korea has expanded its health project by mobilizing community resources and designing the project with three complementing components namely:  (a) Community Health Clinic Facility; (b) Community-led Emergency Transportation System; and (c) Advocacy on the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases.

Recently, CAMP Asia started their programs on Anti-Smoking Campaign activities through slogan and poster making contest to those childrens in their project area. Awarding ceremonies for the winner of their Slogan and Poster Making Contest will be on Saturday together with their program on "WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY".

On May 31, 2014, in celebration of the World No Tabacco Day, a community-wide Anti-Smoking Campaign with a theme “Paninigarilyo ay Iwasan, Kalusugan ay Ingatan” will be held at Marangal Elementary School Covered Court, which will start with a motorcade around the area. An open forum with community members will follow right after. Representatives from the local government unit, Department of Health, academe, and community members are expected to participate in the event.

The project aspires to be able to set-up the ‘first ever’ community-based Smoking Cessation Clinic in a relocation site. This will serve as a shared facility in the community which will help smokers to undergo rehabilitation and recreational activities that will eventually lead them to quit smoking.
