Tension and Trauma Release Exercise, First in the Philippines: “A Post-Catastrophe Program”

Muscle Shaking! Another Stress Reliever!

Trauma and Tension Release Exercise

Did you ever experience trauma, tension, social-violence, losses of your love ones, and stress? Yes, of course, each one of us experiencing stress in daily life situation.

Philippine Society of Sexual & Reproductive Health Nurses (PSORHN) and Helping-Hand Central Luzon (HHCL) are lucky enough to joined this first ever Trauma and Tension Release Exercises (TRE) last January 29 – 31, a 3-day training for the trainers first batch held at OCCI, Emerald Building, Ortigas Center Pasig City. This training was initiated by Human Care Development to train trainers in order to reach the Typhoon Haiyan, Bohol Earthquake survivors and Zamboanga Crisis.

TRE Philippines Batch 1 | January 29 - 31, 2014
OCCI Global, Emerald Buidling, Ortigas Center, Pasig City
The supervised certification process was done last February 13 and 14 at Bayanihan Center, Unilab, Pasig City, a 2-day supervised certification process is a series of set exercises. Each group is composed of five or more members and exchanging manned by one of each member for the introduction, exercise demonstration and observer in the shaking process. The exercise lasts for about an hour and thirty minutes with at least five participants to do the shaking.

TRE is composed of different exercises fatiguing the muscles in order to shake or feel the tremors. This tremor is our body’s way to release our tensions, stress and trauma. This exercise is widely used in 40 different countries across the globe.

According to our mentor and new found friend, Dr. Michael Manginelli, a doctor of medicine and neurology expert said that, he used TRE in different situations in USA such as the Cyclone Sandy, Boston marathon bombing, Connecticut incidence, military personnel and a lot more.

We, meet different kind of people working on the same advocacy and involvement in the community like in HHCL and PSORHN in the areas. This training is great tool, especially for us nurses who immersed ourselves to different kind of emergency and humanitarian responses.

What is TRE?
Dr. David Berceli, founder of TRE
Before anything else, what is TRE? TRE is a tension and trauma release exercise developed by trauma specialist Dr. David Berceli to reduce the impact of traumatic experiences on the body.
It is intended to be taught to large populations for whom trauma and PTSD are pervasive (such as military personnel, and natural disaster survivors), but also benefits anyone who may be holding stress and tension in their body. Benefits and reduction of stress related symptoms are usually reported within the first few sessions, and consistently include a reduction in anxiety and chronic pain, and improvements in sleep quality.

How was it developed?
This was developed after observing the survival behavior of mammals in the in their natural habitat.
Mammals involuntarily release excess energy from their body and restore balance to their nervous system via an innate neuro-muscular tension-release mechanism in the body by having escaped life-threatening fight or flight situations.

As mammals, humans are also have access to this natural stress-release mechanism, and can do well to from it in the same way. This exercise makes this promising via a short series of physical exercises that stretch the core muscles involved in the stress-release process, creating a trembling like mechanism in the muscles that expel stress- and trauma-related tension from the body.

As the pattern of muscular tension in the body changes, the brain establishes a neural pattern related to relaxation, releasing endorphins and other stress-reducing chemicals, and restoring the individual to their natural state of bio-chemical balance.

How it was done?

It is executed in a simple seven (7) steps of mild exercises. This exercises aims to fatigue the muscles in the foot, calf, and thigh to have a trembling or shaking experience. This trembling or shaking can sometimes

experience during fear, anxiety, or illness, the muscular movement evoked by TRE is both self-help, self-administered way to self-regulated, and is as a result experienced without disturbance or discontentment. On the contrary, TRE is consistently reported to leave individuals feeling revitalized and restored, both mentally and physically. Resiliency (the ability to respond to crisis and then return to balance) appears to be significantly enhanced in individuals who use TRE, and with practice, the stress-release mechanism reportedly takes less and less time to evoke. The Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) can be learned in a few sessions and then self-applied without professional guidance or equipment, making this an affordable therapeutic tool for all populations.

This Trauma and Tension Release exercises works best in combination with other type of bodywork modalities such Tai Chi, Yoga and Meditation, experiential therapies such as art and equine therapy, as well as other type of trauma treatment modalities such as EMDR, EFT and Somatic Experiencing. TRE is a set of exercises that can be easy to perform and one can see immediate results which can be preferred by many over Somatic Experiencing, and can also be more effective for treating residual and complex PTSD as well as reduce the risk for re-dramatization that is possible with other trauma modalities such as EMDR.

Is there any contraindication for this exercise?

The only contraindications for this exercise are those people who have recently undergone lower abdominal surgery for the past two months and pregnant women. There is no age limit for this exercise as long they are fit and capable to do it. The youngest who did this exercise was a four year old and the oldest is 80 years old.

Thank you TRE Philippines 2014 for this wonderful experience.

The team also like to say a big thanks to Dr. Mike, who always support us and give us some thoughts and additional information regarding this TRE. Maraming salamat po for being good to us Filipino Nurses. Until next time! See you again for your next visit here in the Philippines.
